Classic Car Buying Guide

So, you want to buy a classic car? It used to be a simple process once upon a time, but nowadays it’s a completely different matter. Massive increases in prices of cars means that care must be taken when buying a classic car.

Think with your head, not your heart

You’re searching online for your dream car, and you find it. A classic Volkswagen Beetle in black. However, there’s a problem. It has a broken gearbox. For a similar price, you could buy a slightly newer beetle. It isn’t in your choice of colour, but it’s in pristine condition. In cases like this, it is important to think before you buy. Your dream car is no use to you if it doesn’t run!

Before buying a car, visit the forum for that car. If you want to buy a VW Campmobile, go online and search for a forum. Forums are extremely useful for identifying common issues with these cars. Whenever possible, ask for advice regarding the car you want. This advice could help you negotiate a lower price for a car, simply based on what you have been told

Research, Research, Research!

The internet is an amazing place. It doesn’t matter what car you want to buy; you can find information about it online. But research isn’t just important for buying the car. Research can also help you find where parts are cheapest for your car, or how expensive insurance and repairs are. So, once you’re done reading, hit the internet and start researching!

Finally, Money

Over the past few weeks, I’ve interviewed a couple of classic car owners. All of them have said the same thing: You’ll always have to spend money on your car. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve bought a pristine car or a rustbucket, due to the age of the car, parts are rare. This makes them extremely expensive. Something as simple as a tyre repair could end up costing more than you thought because the repair shop doesn’t have the exact tyre. It is common practice to set aside at least a few grand for repairs. Insurance is also expensive due to the value of classic cats going up. Do not go for a cheap insurance as they may not always be good.
