Interview of Volkswagen Campmobile owner

Interviewee: vwcampmobile (Instagram)

So, tell me a little about your car.

My car is a VW T2 Campmobile from 1978. It’s painted in a unique shade of green, with classic VW-style silver wheels. It doesn’t have any major modifications, except for the spare tyre bolted on to the front of the bus.

What do you love about it?

As a camper, I like the freedom it provides. I can drive, camp, cook, tailgate or just pull over and sleep for the night. I always have a choice in the campmobile. With this camper, there really are no limits. It also looks really good, so good that I’ve entered in a few vintage car shows over the years!

What stuff about it annoys you?

Maintenance of a vintage car can be quite difficult. It’s a responsibility that never ends. Quality parts and knowledgeable service people are hard to find. It can be stressful when there’s a problem you can’t figure out or a part you need is no longer available. Not to worry though, because the community of VW owners is a tight- knit and supportive group, so you will be able to find someone who can help you!

What’s something interesting about the car that non- owners don’t know?

How it handles on the road! The VW Campmobile can handle roads very well, but what surprises people is how well it handles in sharp corners, and how easy it is to manoeuvre. As a new owner, I assumed it would easily flip so I was overly cautious in corners. Since then I’ve learned how well the bus was engineered for driving. The campmobile may be slow, but I’m confident it will stick to the road when I need it to!

Finally, what is something you would say to someone who wants to buy a classic car?

Don’t buy on impulse or emotions. Take your time and find a well maintained, rust-free vehicle, even if it costs more. It will be worth it in the long run, since you won’t have to spend lots of money on it. Also, you should learn how to work on the vehicle yourself. Most repair shops won’t have experience with older cars and the ones that do will cost a fortune.

Thanks for the interview!
