It’s the 1970s. A family is getting ready to go camping. All their luggage packed up, they bundle into one of the most iconic cars of all time, A VW Camper. Then main task when creating the T2 camper was not to simply create a caravan version of the new type 2, but to upgrade and build on the T1 camper. As such, the new car was larger than the T1 camper, although on first sight it may look as if the T2 is smaller. The new car also featured a more powerful engine, while also upgrading electronics. The T2 camper also featured a newer height raising system, which used electronics instead of hydraulics, which reduced the weight on the rear axle.
The interior of the T2 camper was not too different from the t1 camper, featuring the usual components that are featured in most caravans. However, the space inside was bigger and brighter, improving on what was already a great interior in the T1 camper. However, the biggest improvement over the T1 was the new elevated roof. This was a feature that allowed owners to push the roof up and create a larger living space, allowing you to feel more comfortable while staying in the camper.
The T2 was extremely successful, and while many critics complained that its looks weren’t as iconic as the T1 camper, this didn’t stop the car from selling extremely well. While the production of the caravan version ended in the late 70s, the T2 van was produced until December 2013! The car remained in high demand in South America, causing it to stay in production.
While the T1 camper was iconic, the T2 camper was the car that really brought the camper van into the modern age. The shape of the T2 camper was imitated by many other vans on the market, showing that it really was an incredible product.
